What you should know when you are flying with your baby

Are you flying for the first time with your baby? It could be a holiday or business trip or simply visiting someone. Traveling for the first time with your baby can be a little nerve wreaking. Don’t know what to expect. How would the baby cope with flying? Will the baby sleep like usual? Will it disturb her schedule? These are the most common questions we ponder about when we travel with babies.

Babies fly with a  X amount of percentage of the adult flight ticket depending on which airline you take (ex: 10% or 15%) They are called lap babies from ages 2 weeks to 24 months. You would not need to purchase a seat for your baby unless it’s more than 24 months (same for Air Asia)

Questions

How do i check in my stroller?

Check in

I get this question a lot. When you check in, tell the person that you will be checking in your stroller at the gate they will give you a tag to hang on your stroller. Usually they will know cause your ticket will say you have a child with you. They will ask if you want to check in the stroller or at the gate and you want to say check in at the gate. Checking in at the gate meaning you can take the stroller with you until you board. They will ask people with stroller or wheelchair to board first and you can just leave your stroller with their assistant. If you check in with your baggage with your stroller, it will be treated like a baggage. They will take it when you check in. This is a standard procedure for all air lines (Yes even Air Asia. You can stroll until the plane and there will be an assistant to take your stroller)

Arrival

When you exit wait at the door of the plane. It takes them a couple of minutes for them to get the stroller out from the baggage cabin. It is not stow at the passenger cabin but with the baggage. If the air stewardess ask just say you are waiting for the stroller which usually they will know. Each stroller will be in a thick clear plastic bag. Just find your stroller and pop it up and you are good to go.

Sleeping

With a baby when you buy your ticket you can request for a baby bassinet on flight. The seating will be at the first row with extra leg room. There will be no extra charge. Having said that it’s always first come first serve. There fore don’t book the flight too late otherwise all the seats will be taken and the seats are very limited (usually only in the middle row, some airlines don’t use side row. All depends on your airline)

No bassinet for Air Asia local (not sure for their international flights) You can buy the front row which is their hot seats with extra charge.

Most babies will find it difficult to sleep especially when they are at a new and a crowded environment. Do have a sleeping routine so that the baby can feel safe to sleep in your arms first before putting her in the bassinet.

When baby Berry was sleepy in the plane, i sway her at the corner of the plane, maybe sing her a tune to sleep. I made sure that she was sleepy, pop in her pacifier and sway to calm her down and before i know it she was fast asleep, no more than 15 minutes. I prep the bassinet with her own blanket and brought her favorite snuggly to sleep. I just lay her in the bassinet pull the shades up and it’s nighty nighty for her. I flew 23 hours flight with no problems. On top of that i played with her and made sure that she was very tired so that it’s easier for her to sleep ;)

Feeding, what are you allow to bring on board?

You can bring water or hot water, formula, baby food, baby snack basically anything for a baby. Some countries may require for you to declare your baby formula (because of the ingredients) but with most countries it should not be a problem. Pack your formula in a air tight tupperware and make sure it won’t leak. Do make sure you time the feedings accurately especially if you are traveling with a time difference. Some babies will lose appetite when they travel just like adults. Be patient and once they are settled in the new place everything will be back to normal.

The airline will come with a complimentary baby food (usually Heinz baby food) but of course if your baby are not taking any baby food yet you can always ask them to take it back. Some airlines will provide complimentary baby goody bag (it contains a diaper, lotion, nappy cream etc)

Air pressure can hurt babies ears

Taking off and landing can hurt babies ears. If you have encounter with babies crying in a plane while taking off or landing this is probably the case. I think most parents missed out on this little detail until they are flying. Nothing to worry just pop in the pacifier or if it’s a breastfeeding baby just nurse the baby and the baby should be fine.

Don’t forget even though if your flight is 1 hour or 20 hours remember to bring toys to entertain your baby. Babies will get irritated or fussy, after all it’s a restrict area for a period of time.

Pooping

If you can i would say poop the baby when you are at the airport where by you get a proper changing area. But of course you never know when the baby might poop so it’s totally out of your control. There is a pull down changing table in the plane. Bear in mind that the washroom in the plane is very small. You won’t get much space to properly clean the baby. I must say it was a challenge for me, no fear it still can be done :P

Don’t be afraid to ask for hot water with the air stewardess or anything else. They will be more than glad to assist you. Do prepare extra diapers, formula, baby wipes, clothes, handkerchief whatever else that you need in case there’s a delay. Happy flying ;)

Baby Bjorn review (original)

I bought this when i went to Canada. Knowing that i definitely needed something to carry baby Berry in with while walking through the crowds and when i want to make a move. I have to say when i first got it, i was so in love with it. It’s really good when you are on the go. Want to jump in and out with a baby and you have free hands to carry stuff. This is something i can’t live without when i travel. The design is really good.  It’s user friendly, clean sleek straps easy to put the baby in and out. The carrier has a ergonomic support from the head, back, shoulders, hips from birth. It holds on really well it’s like the baby is sitting in a harnest and it’s very comfortable.

Specifications, product care and carrying positions (BabyBjorn)

It can be use from newborn (at least 8 lbs and 21 in/3.5 kg and 53 cm) up to 25 lbs/11 kg. If you buy this early you definitely can use this to the maximun level. I only bought this when baby Berry was 5 months. Didn’t get a chance to use it when she was younger.

It’s 100% cotton fabric. The textiles closest to the child have been tested and approved in accordance with Oeko-Tex Standard 100, class 1 for baby products. They are guaranteed harmless to children’s sensitive skin and will not trigger allergies. It’s safe for baby to bite. When i first use it baby Berry always bite it cause it falls just right under her chin and it’s good to know that it’s a safe material for her to bite.

I just hand wash mine but it can be machine wash. Wash separately with a gentle, bleach-free detergent (baby detergent) or occasionally wipe it with a wet cloth.

When the child is older and has a stronger neck, the head support may be folded down, allowing the child to be carried facing forward and to have a look around.

There are a variety of colors for you to choose from. I played safe and choose black which i think i regret a little. Black can easily attract dust and mosquitoes, i should have choose a lighter color (really like the beige color) Only realize that after i start to use it (oh well!) But i like the funky colors too, so pick your favorite color :)

Indoors and outdoors

Not only it can be used outdoors but it can be used for indoors as well. It comes in handy during the early months when the baby needs to be held for sleeping or wants to be cuddle most of the time. It gives you the freedom to carry the baby and do things at the same time without making your arms tired. Dad’s can wear this too to rock the baby to sleep before putting the baby down to the crib. All the dad’s don’t have the excuse of saying they don’t know how to carry the baby etc :P It’s nice and comfy and the baby can hear the heart beat just like when mom is carrying them ;)

Having said that using the Bjorn too much at home will become a bad habit. Just another accessory to carry the baby instead of your arms. So if you are planning to use it do use it carefully.

In this picture baby Berry was 5 months. As i mention before this is definitely one of my baby gear must have. Even though baby Berry is 10 months now, it’s good to give her some relieve time when she’s tired of sitting in the stroller. . When i first put her in it she already love it. She really enjoys being in the Bjorn. Having said that….putting your baby in different accessories etc in the early stages are easier to train them. My best friend bought the Bjorn when her daughter was 6 months and she refuse to be in it. She didn’t have a good experience and she said it’s wasted. Of course now that she know for the next child she will start using earlier. Babies start to be choosy when they reach 6 months. They will start to be skeptical with things they are not familiar with.

It’s also great use when the baby gets fussy and just hook her on instead of carrying her in your arms. Seriously….. how long can you carry her? Maybe when the baby is light you won’t feel any stress in your arms, but what happens when i’s 8kg or more ? How long can your arms handle? You really gotta think about it. Hubby and i are not the carrying parents, if she need to be carried either one of us will hook her up on the Bjorn. We don’t put her there for long, around half and hour. It’s said that the baby can stay in the Bjorn for 2 hours. That is if the baby is sleeping for those who use it at home.
It was easy for me to bring baby Berry at the busy airport going through custom, check in’s etc.

Baby Berry at 10 months. As i said before it’s great use when at a crowded place like pasar malam (night market) and dad can just hook her on. At the same time she can enjoy the walk with you.

Some down side to the Bjorn

I have no doubt that when the baby is small it’s really a fantastic baby gear to have. It’s said that the way that it’s design that it won’t hurt your back cause it uses the upper part of your body instead of the shoulders or the back so that it’s balance and the weight is evenly distributed when carrying the baby. Well….. it is when the baby is light after using it for awhile now and baby Berry is growing with the Bjorn i definitely can tell you what are the down side.

As she gets heavier the Bjorn does tug on my shoulders a bit. The thing is there’s a X at the back which can be adjusted and that is how it distribute the weight. But even i have adjusted it properly and evenly because she’s heavier now after i carried her in between my shoulder back area is quite stressed. You need to pull the X at the back properly otherwise you would feel the baby is heavy cause the straps determine how it balances out the weight. There was one time i felt she was heavy and i kept on telling hubby that it was not like that the last time i carried her so after fiddling with the Bjorn and we finally found out why. Hubby just fix the X at the back and immediately she got lighter. A lot of people don’t know that. I met a girl on the flight on the way back from Canada she have the same Bjorn and she was telling me that it hurts her back a little. So i told her to adjust the X properly, definitely you can feel the difference.

I’ve shop around for carriers before i bought this and i have to say the sleek stylish user friendly design wins it all. Award winning and good quality for a carrier it is a little pricey. I have to say it was worth it. I just fold it and put it in my stroller basket or in my baby bag. I love how easy it is to snap on the baby. Before this i tried some that was like a ton of straps and it’s just too complicated to just put the baby in. It comes in different type of material that suit different type of usage like active carrier, air carrier mesh material, organic, synergy and comfort. The original material is not that hot even though they have a material that’s for summer weather which is the air comfort (made with mesh material) Active carrier can carry the baby up to 2 years with a extra belt support. So there is a variety for your to choose from.

I got mine for Rm 399 original. Each model price differs, it’s Rm 399 onwards. Even with the down side of the Bjorn i still love it. I think it’s great for daddy’s to snap the baby on when mommy is tired. I definitely feel that the dad can take the baby weight more than the mom’s. Hope you find this review helpful happy shopping ;)

What is Flexi bath? review

Flexi bath Award winning design Formland 2008

What is this bathtub all about? Not only that it’s great for traveling but also great to use at home. I don’t know why they call it hard plastic to me i would consider it soft plastic but hard enough to stand on it’s own(The material is different from your normal bathtub which i call those hard plastic) When i saw this bathtub i have to say i was really impress with the design, how it can fold together in such a slim manner.

I bought the original color i like how i can see through the plastic :P It comes in so many colors some see through some in solid colors. It says from 0-4 yrs but i feel that for infant it’s a little too deep. Definitely would need that net thingy to put on top or any type of support for babies. When the baby is bigger the water can be deep enough to cover most of the body up to the shoulders when they are sitting. I didn’t know at first when baby Berry was 5 months and was not able to sit steadily yet so i bath her in a slanted position and the bathtub move. Don’t use the bathtub for support because it is soft and it will move. It shock me when i was bathing her and when her leg stretch out the bathtub will follow outwards.

The soft rubber lining makes the edges foldable. You can see how compact it is. When i traveled to Canada in my 25″ bag it took just about 4 inches of my space. It’s just wonderful that i can have so much space with a bathtub. Especially with a baby you should know there’s a lot of things to pack when you travel.

Rm 199 at Robinsons

I like the size i think it’s just right and can even fit 2 babies. It is a little pricey for a bathtub but if you use it since day one you will always get the maximum benefit out of it. A good 4 years which i think it’s reasonable time and can always store it away and keep it for the next baby (the quality is very good)

Although now that baby Berry can sit and going to walk soon, bathing her in a tub will take longer cause she loves to play with the water. For a fast one i like to use hand shower where by she can sit and can easily shower her and i’m done. Having said if you are traveling you are unable to do that. Most hotels don’t have a hand shower so with a baby you would need a bathtub even though baby Berry can sit. You can bath a baby in the adult tub. It’s just not safe.

At the beginning hubby and i was like are you crazy so expensive for a bathtub!? After searching for other options…. which was very limited. We found one that’s like a blow up pool and that cost Rm 145 might as well get a proper one. That one, you have to blow it everyday and you can’t leave it blowed up. Hubby was like, i ain’t blowing it for you everyday >_< haha. So with very little time and we were about to fly soon so we just bought this one. I have to say both of us have no regrets :) It is so convenient, we never have to worry about packing it. One of my baby gear must have when i know there is no hand shower. But definitely is more useful for those with a baby that is still younger than 6 months. That is why when you buy it since day 1 definitely will get full benefit and when you think about it it’s not that expensive. It can be use from 0-4 years, from home to traveling and can be easily stored away and keep for the next baby ;)

Luggage,baggage

I’m jet lagged, my first time blogging in the middle of the night @ 3:30 am. So i’ve decided to share how i packed. When you have a baby with you, you will definitely will have extra baggage.

Are you feeling like this at times when you’re packing? I’m sure you do especially with the ladies and when you have a baby it gets worse. Each time when i travel, i try to think ahead and see if i’m planning to do lot of shopping, which usually is the case we, what the heck am i saying. Do excuse me, it is after all 3:30am :P . Anyways, i always try to pack half of my luggage size. Most people will use a wheeled luggage of some sort. Do you know what size is your luggage?

I’m going to use Samsonite as a reference so that it’s easier for people to roughly know what i’m talking about. Samsonite is available everywhere and you can always compare the sizes when you need to purchase a extra suitcase or just any suitcase. Each brand comes in different sizes, but it’s just 1 or 2 inches apart.

Samsonite family

The picture above shows the most common sizes of luggages. The biggest one is 25″, then 20″ and cabin size. As i was saying, i usually try to pack half of the size in the luggage so that when i buy things i will have the space and it will be nicely filled up. Having said that, also take into consideration the location of your trip. If you are traveling in the summer or spring it should not be a problem cause the clothes are light and not bulky. When it’s winter it is a little bit more challenging, but it can still be done. These days, life is so much easier with the 4 wheel luggage. You’re just walking with it alongside, don’t even need the strength to drag. Invest in a mid range brand so that you can ensure that the quality is there. The last thing you want to happen is your bag’s wheels die on you on your trip o_O Samsonite is a high end brand, therefore it can be pretty expensive but there are lots of mid range brand out there with good quality.

Pack wisely, how to do that? I’ll be sharing some tips that worked for me and i hope it will work for you too.

Know what you need and how long you’re going for.

I’m pretty sure everyone has gotten into this situation some how. I sure did. If you are packing for winter, you really need to think about what you need first. Always bring a thermo top and bottom it will help you save space from bringing too much super thick sweaters, and it’s also a must have for winter. A zip sweater is also very important. You can always wear something thin inside or as a extra jacket for those super cold days before wearing your coat. My favorite, anything that has fleece in it. Fleece is the best thing that can keep you warm and cozy. I always have a fleece sweater to stand by for those cold icy days. My personal favorite is a fleece zip sweater with a hood :) A 2 in one :P For winter you can’t afford to pack extra cause it will take up too much space. Maybe 3-4 light sweater (cause you already have your thermo) 2 pair of jeans, 2 t shirts some accessories like gloves, scarf, ear muffs, hat and a reliable winter coat. I would also recommend to invest in a good winter coat. It will take you longer than you think. At the same time a good winter coat can keep you warm and you don’t need to dress as heavy so you get to save space. Everything else you can mix and match along the way. Who knows, you probably bought some new stuff already ;) . I just hate it when i’m not dressed comfortably when i’m out. I’ll be cold and just want to find a warm place and it’s irritating. If you have the right items, you’ll be ensured that you will be warm throughout your trip. Especially if you are going to be outdoors. Don’t you just want to enjoy the view rather than rushing back inside?

When packing:

  • Do not over-fold your clothes (sweaters can be pretty thick after folding it properly,  just fold it twice so that it’s still flat)
  • Do not pack your shoes together (put each one of them in a separate plastic bag. It can be stored either at the corner so that it can be place at an angle (for boots) or at the outside pocket of the suitcase (this is only for suitcase that has a big open pocket at the front, not the flat ones)
  • Don’t pack your accessories or anything that comes out thick (ex: toiletries: separate them and store it in the small areas around the suitcase)
  • Another option is to roll your clothes(recommended for spring/summer clothes, not for winter one because after rolling it’s still thick)

The key thing is to pack as flat as possible so that you can put more things. Otherwise you’ll end up like the picture above. Also if you are using a small bag and try to pack more things that you can actually fit, then you better think again, it just can’t happen. That is why you should always think ahead and have at least a rough estimation. When i travel, there’s no harm in having extra space in my suitcase at all.

Are you overweight?

Each airlines has a different baggage weight and dimension guidelines, check your airline if you think you might be overweight. The charges can be very pricey.

How did i manage my scary baggage o_O without going overweight

I had to be creative when i have so much things! (we caught a lot of attention, lol)

I certainly did not believe that i’ll be coming home with this much baggage. I have 2 26″, 1 cabin size and a duffle bag for spare when i went to Toronto. I bought so much of baby Berry things that i had to buy another suitcase. I purchased a Samsonite 20″ and i’m glad i did. This is what i mean when i say don’t try to pack more things than you can because you just couldn’t. Even though i’ve estimated that i’m going to shop but I didn’t realize it was going to be so much. So i had to resort to buying another suitcase. I was going back and forth whether i should buy a new suitcase because i was worried that i was going to be overweight. Hubby checked with the airline and confirmed that we can have 5 checked in suitcases because we have a baby. Also for carry on as well. With a baby you do get perks like that and they do over look small little things. We had over weight carry on (11kg when the limit is 7kg) and they let us through albeit with a warning :P

Of course with 5 checked in luggage there’s a high chance we would go over the limit.  Hubby put each bag on the scale and see how much it weigh. Usually you may end up around 3-4kg over the limit. What we did is just open up your bags and redistribute the weight evenly. This comes in handy when you packed but at times you won’t know until the bag reached the scale. Something so small and no one ever realized this is how it’s done. Weighing the bag again and voila! just nice not overweight. Another thing they will also weigh your carry on and you can do the same. Sort things out evenly, notebook, camera, etc can be heavy when they are all together.

Baby berry first flight experience

@ KLIA daddy checking us in. Ready for a 22 hour flight to Toronto, Canada. Baby berry at 5 months + and i’m ready to be the annoying parent that’s in the plane with a crying baby. Always wondered how that feel like. Finally i had that chance :P It was a early flight and i was worried how is she going to take her naps and will she sleep like usual?!

Cathy Pacific KL-HK (small bassinet)

Lucky for me for the first half of the flight there was not much problem. We had a transit at Hong Kong, the first flight we took was a small one. This is the bassinet they provide. It was so small. Luckily she slept in it. It was only 3 and half hours flight and she took a short nap.

Transit at Hong Kong. She didn’t have enough sleep was crying while waiting. But she was all fine as we board on the next flight. Too much activity happening and she was reluctant to sleep for the longest time. But when she did she could not fine her usual or comfy spot and did cry a bit.

Cathy Pacific HK-Toronto (bigger bassinet, i would say standard size)

Thank goodness the next long flight was a big plane and had bigger bassinet. Of course we had the bulk seats (first row with leg space) Really does comes in handy when you have a baby. A lot of movements, feeding, patting, playing. Now i know how useful those seats are. I cannot imagine not sitting in one of those seats. I was prepared for almost everything that could have happened. Also want to ensure that she feels nice and comfy safe and secure so that sleeping would not be an issue (which usually is, since it’s a foreign place and all cramped up within an area) She did cry a little when she wanted to sleep but just couldn’t but right after she fell asleep, i had no problem at all. I had her blankets and cuddly bunny with her and she was nice and cozy in the bassinet. She did sleep through the night :D  She didn’t have any air pressure problem cause every time we take off and land i ensure that she was sucking on a pacifier and gave her a toy.

It’s winter at Toronto and it’s time to bundle her up. The plan was from airport to taxi to hotel. Canada is famous for their winter wind and when it blows it’s pretty darn cold.

Waiting for a cab. We arrived at about 7pm and it was not that cold. The weather felt like fall at the moment and i only had a sweater didn’t even need a jacket. I guess she was tired after immigration and waiting for baggage. The cold cozy weather made her sleepy :P

Threw her on the bed once we arrived. Finally made it through the 22 hours flight without too much fuss :) Now it’s time to deal with jet lag, lol

Baby berry settled in nicely except for the jet lag she had for about 1 week + Other than that she’s been enjoying the fluffy soft king size bed and watching her morning cartoons :)

Few of my favourite things from Malacca

Satay celup! What can i say, some of you might think it’s lame but i like it. Nothing beats food on a stick in a spicy peanut sauce. My favourites are foo chuk and yul char quay. It’s like a sponge that soak up all the sauce :P

Another one of my favourite choices are prawn and cockles (see hum)

Dip it in for a few minutes and ready to eat. Some people might find it not hygienic but why are you thinking when your eating :P Just eat it!

One of the most popular food in Malacca is the Chicken Rice Ball. Personally i don’t really enjoy it. I guess cause i come from the town of chicken noodle don’t really find the chicken appealing. But i do find the rice ball appealing. Ya everyone gotta try and eat rice in a form of a ball ^_^

One of my must have in Malacca is cendol! Very popular Jonker Dessert at Jonker Street. It’s usually very crowded with people on the weekends and holidays.

Not only it’s popular for it’s dessert you can find the shop is decorated with antiques all around.

typewriter is real.

Old shops usually have a fake upstairs.

They have lot’s of choices for cendol on the menu. Not only they serve cendol, there are 2 other stalls that serve Baba laksa and goreng goreng (fried stuff)

We order one regular cendol and one with durian. Some sort of dry noodle and some goreng goreng.

Cendol is a must have. I just love the Malacca brown sugar, yum! If you don’t know what’s cendol, it’s the green thing that looks like a worm. It’s not as disgusting as you think. Cendol in a whole is crush ice with big red bean, cendol, brown sugar and some coconut on top.

When i look at this table and chairs it’s what they use in a kung fu movie.

What’s on Jonker Street? Chinese clogs. I don’t know why but they are lot’s of them.

You will also come across fancy trishaw around the streets

Hmm….

Caps made of Coke and Pepsi cans.

Not sure what this is but i thought it looks kinda creepy.

This wall is popular for wedding shots. I saw it in a couple of bridal shops.

Along the streets…

The Jetty. It’s behind Holiday Inn hotel. It goes far out and they have pubs, and karaoke in the vicinity.

Time to sign off…

No more getting lost in Malaysia with Google Maps Get Directions!

When I was working in the States, I never had the fear of getting lost, simply because of Google Maps. I can get directions to anywhere, even remote towns using Google Maps. And whenever I’m lost, and weren’t prepared, I simply have to stop by a wireless hotspot, turn on the laptop, and find out where I am on Google Maps.

Back in Malaysia, I was a little disappointed that Google didn’t extend this service to this country. However, only today, I found out that it’s finally up and running here!

Of Cabbages And Condoms…

How is cabbages and condoms related? Cabbages are a common food in Northeast Thailand, in fact they are a staple part of the diet, they are grown in all villages, there are everywhere and everybody uses them. Now, if condoms could be as common and used as often, then some of the population and health problems facing Thailand could be overcome. Let’s take a journey inside the restaurant.

Source Cabbages and Condom (background)

The restaurant is located at Soi 12, Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok a little lane next to a hotel.

There’s a souvenir shop at the restaurant.

Flowers are made of condoms. You will see decorations within the restaurant decorated by condoms.

Rather interesting…

Santa condom and his lovely beach girl condom. You can see everything is made out of condom, creative.

From the entrance onwards i was just snapping away like some freaky tourist. Can’t help myself :P So how does the restaurant actually look like…..

I was so surprise on the set up, it’s so pretty. I pick to sit outside, great ambience. Luckily that day was not too hot and they did a good mosquito fogging too.

I think upstairs is the smoking section.

They serve traditional Thai food with some Western food. Well.. most visitors there are tourist. Didn’t take any pictures on the food cause i order typical tom yum and pineapple fried rice. The food taste pretty good. In Thailand if you eat local food, it’s pretty safe. I enjoy Thai food and pretty much stick to the same type. Pricing is slighty more expensive than outside but still affordable. Example: if a tom yum cost 180 Baht outside it would cost 250 Baht here.

Last but not least, this is Condom man. It says made from contraceptive pills.

When you pay the bill they will give you condoms for souvenir. They gave me & Peking duck a red and a blue one. It’s a place you should pop by whenever you pay a visit to Bangkok.

Don’t forget to be safe!

Till next time…
