Thailand’s Floating Market

Damnoen Saduak (Thai: ดำเนินสะดวก, lit. Comfortable travel) is a district (Amphoe) in central Thailand in the province Ratchaburi. The central town is most famous because of its floating market held every day till noon on a khlong not far from the district office. However as it has become a prime touristical attraction of the Bangkok vicinity the market lost its authenticity.

We were shocked when we heard that the best time to visit the Floating Market was 7-8am. We were tired from our daily tours from one place to another and now we have to wake up… factor in time for breakfast, about 6am?! And it’s going to take about 1 1/2 hours drive to get there. After much deliberation, we decided to go for it and try to nap in the cab if we’re still sleepy. We booked a cab to get us there. The next morning, I guess our cabbie drove quite fast because before we knew it, once we open our eyes we were at our destination. Feeling relieved and stretching our legs, we got down from the cab and walked to the dock.

We were served with free coconut juice but we were afraid to drink it. There’s no such thing as free lunch, and after our previous experiences, we were wary of such unwarranted niceties; we didn’t want to consume anything before finding out their prices. Basically the trip is a boat ride along the canal. After finding out the price for the boat ride, and paying it, only then we felt comfortable enough to drink the coconut juices :P .

Right after we took off from the dock.

Wooden stalls along the canal selling souvenirs. Remember to bargain if you want to buy something.

We made a scheduled stop at a coconut sugar farm on the way.

This is how they process the coconut into sugar. It is similar to how people make palm sugar.

We bought a pack of the coconut candy.

It has peanuts inside and it’s very tasty.

Moving along…..

Finally we arrived at the market. As you can see all the wooden stalls are selling mostly souvenirs here.

When we get to the main market, we see some boats selling fruits and other snacks.

Pinocchio is not exactly very cute here. I think the puppets looked a bit scary.

My friend bought a coconut tree lamp made out of coconut and I bought a pair of lazy cats in a lying down position.

Some of the boats were selling food and fruits. We bought mango and ate it along the way.

The whole trip took about 1 1/2 hours. It was a interesting experience. There’s so much things to see and how people live their lives. We saw an old lady taking a shower, ewwww… did she look at the water?! I’m glad we made the decision of waking up early for this visit. It is quite extraordinary.

After that we head on to the elephant ride nearby.

We were riding on this, be sure to have an elephant driver/guide. Some dude blog about his experience when he was in Thailand riding on an elephant without a driver and the elephant just went his own way. Since the elephant trek is in the jungle, the elephant will stop sometimes to pick on some leaves to eat. What goes in must come out….

That’s the elephant my friend is riding on and her elephant needs to pee and take a dump in the middle of the ride. It’s like a running tap, haha! We saw it taking a dump too.

Mr. Cool here is posing for us to take a snapshot.

Overall it was a nice experience. Since we started early in the day, after the floating market we head back to Bangkok and took a ride on the Chao Phraya River and visit Wat Arun, Temple of Dawn.

The Amazing Race Asia 3: 4th leg results (Taiwan)

Zhao an, ni hao! Welcome to Taiwan! The 4th leg results:

1. Ida & Tania
2. Vince & Sam
3. Mai & Oliver
4. Henry & Bernie
5. AD & Fuzzie
6. Geoff & Tisha
7. Niroo & Kapil (skipped the last task, eliminated)

Niroo & Kapil faced a lot of difficulties with the car; they are not able to retrieve the keys, and with Niroo not wanting to leave the car unguarded, caused huge delays with their tasks. Niroo probably turned the car off without putting it to “P” (Park) mode, resulting in the keys being stuck at ignition, a normal occurrence with automatic transmission cars.

On the other hand, Mai has been showing a lot of improvement since the 1st leg, there’s a lot more enthusiasm and good overall attitude coming from her! Mai, keep up the good work and hope to see more good things from you!

Till next week!

The Amazing Race Asia 3: Natalie speaks

As we all know by now, Natalie and Pailin, the Beauty Queens, have been eliminated from the race. From what’s seen on TV, Natalie seems to be the “fragile” one, in a puteri-lilin kinda way. I can’t help but empathize with Pailin, who does seem to be a strong racer. She would definitely race better, paired with a stronger partner, someone like Oliver. Hopefully there’ll be an Amazing Race Asia All-Star with them in it!

Back to Natalie, she gave her side of the story over at the Amazing Race Asia Blog: Natalie’s Blog Entry. To be fair, Amazing Race Asia *is* a show after all, subject to editing by the producers. And sometimes, what ends up on TV may not be partial to the contestants, for whatever reasons. But still, I wonder why she puts on the sweater instead of using sunblock. Wouldn’t heat stroke with the sweater be more dangerous than a reduced sunburn with a sunblock on?

And IMHO skipping the task was a bad choice, no matter how you put it. You didn’t give the producers any chance to let you stay on a NEL, even if they wanted to. Because with the 4-hour penalty, there is NO way your team can escape being eliminated the next round. Might as well eliminate this round itself, eh?

I sympathize with Natalie for the hardship that she went through and for the unseen footages of her hard work, but lets face it, it’s a race, everybody goes through the same hardship, and the series of bad decisions she made, coupled with her low morale due to under-estimating the toughness of the race caused their elimination.

On to the next leg later tonight! Sit tight!

Daily Tips: How to know which choice you really want

Have you ever been trapped in between choices, unable to decide which one you like best? And then after you have made the decision, you suddenly felt that you preferred the other choice better?

Whenever I’m faced with that kind of dilemma, I have a simple trick that I use to find out which one of the choices that I really really want. Simply take out a coin, assign the choices to head or tail, and flip it, covering the result with your palm.

Then listen closely to yourself, in your heart, which of the outcome that you are silently wishing for, head, or tails? Most of the time, you’ll find that you are secretly wishing for a certain outcome to happen, i.e. “please come out heads, please come out heads” – and voila! That’s the choice you really wanted.

Good luck!

Benefit Posie Tint & Rush Hour, Great Long Lasting Stain

My bff got me Benefit’s posie tint and rush hour when she came to visit me. Aw….. thanx girl! I enjoy it very much. Easy to use and looks so so natural. Both are for lips and cheek a instant make over. Long lasting stain that looks very natural.

For cheek: brush 3 strokes on apples of cheek and blend quickly with your fingertips.

For lips: dot lips and blend. For deeper “pop” of color, repeat.

Since it’s a stain, you don’t have to worry about re-applying. That’s the key to it. It’s natural, long lasting, hassle free. The best part of it is that i can just use my fingers to blend so i don’t have to bring a brush. I can just bring this small bottle put it in my handbag and not to worry looking pale when i go out. Don’t have to bring a big make up bag with me wherever i go. I have fair skin and without blusher i can look ghostly :P

The first time when i use rush hour was that the texture was so smooth. Also leaves a long lasting stain and no worries about those icky things that’s around the corner of your lips after a few hours. Maybe that’s why it’s so smooth. Some people call it the multi-stick and they even apply it on their eyes. No brushes hassle free. It comes in 1 neutral shade call Sunberry. Suitable for all skin tones.

Have fun girls!
