Why Is Phra Phrom In Front Of The Malls In Bangkok?

Phra Phrom is the 4 face buddha in Thailand also known as the Erawan Shrine. We wanted to visit 4 face buddha temple in Bangkok, but according to the receptionist we asked, she told us there isn’t any. She did tell us where to go where by we can just go there and pray. Once we got there, we found out it was in front of a mall. There are lot’s of little stalls on the streets selling flowers and incense for praying. Lot’s of people were praying on the corner of the street right next to the mall. What a weird place for praying.

Look at all the jasmine flowers they are all stacked up.

What i hear is you must pray Phra Phrom in all 4 directions clockwise but some say depends on your gender and time that you are praying, it could be anti-clockwise, not too sure. Research if you are serious in praying the Phra Phrom.

A lot of foreigners and locals was praying. We went to a few malls and also see Phra Phrom is located outside of the malls. We also offer jasmine flowers that comes with incense cost 30 baht. I didn’t know there was a direction i need to follow but i did what the majority was doing which was moving left. Still don’t know why Phra Phrom is in front of all the malls. But i guess they are there for a reason. For those who know you can share your experience with me. Till next time…

  • I am quite confused. How do u move left and yet anti clockwise.

  • Opps! was thinking the other way.

  • I didn’t do any reseach but relying on my deductive skills. I guessing the shrines are out in a popular place and is used for praying for good luck for both the visitiors and the business vendors. It’s the same practice as those chinese red shrines businesses put outside their premises (by the road in front of their shops).A big row of shops might share a single altar.

The Erawan Shrine was built in 1956 as part of the government-owned Erawan Hotel to eliminate the bad karma believed caused by laying the foundations on the wrong date.

The hotel’s construction was delayed by a series of mishaps, including cost overruns, injuries to laborers, and the loss of a shipload of Italian marble intended for the building. Furthermore, the Ratchaprasong Intersection had once been to put criminals on public display.

An astrologer advised building the shrine to counter the negative influences. The Brahma statue was designed and built by the Department of Fine Arts and enshrined on 9 November 1956. The hotel’s construction thereafter proceeded without further incident.[2] In 1987, the hotel was demolished and the site used for the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel.[3]
