From An Employer’s Perspective

It is hard these days to deal with employees. I don’t believe in the china man business style, work the employees to the max with no over time or having discriminating rules and restrictions that doesn’t make sense. Everything is too restricted. There’s only 1 thing, “what the boss says”.

I prefer to practice my own management style as an employer. I was also an employee once, and know how it feels to bind by those unnecessary rules that has no efficiency. The bosses just want to check on the staff and control how they work. I would like to focus on the objective and execute the task. Everyone is an individual, whatever works for them. If they have certain ways of doing things but easier and faster, by all means, just get the job done. Bosses look at the performance. As an adult, i believe that everyone to be mature and know when they are at work, they hold their own accountability and responsibility. But of course i know that not everyone is like that. When it’s time to evaluate, it will show through performance. The boss is not blind, they just don’t show it.

As i am learning from day to day as an employer, it is like each day i’m experiencing something new. I try to have flexible rules to my staff and let my staff voice out their thoughts and ideas. At the beginning everything was smooth. The staff’s were happy and everything was going well. As time goes by, they start to neglect the fact that my flexibility is a privilege and not a right. To have a happy employee that works for you, they will rock at their job, motivated and performs well. To have a unhappy employee, they will go behind your back and stab you and your company (politics, nuf said).

It’s a privilege not a right

I believe in giving freedom in their job (which is a privilege). We are just all humans and i understand everyone need breaks from time to time. When i find out my staff were doing inappropriate things but nothing major, just go out for 30 mins during their working hours. I’ll let it slide and not even question the problem. I believe that as long as they do their job and perform well, little things like this doesn’t have to be an issue. What is upsetting is that the staff gets more demanding. Instead of appreciating, they get more demanding. My staff get their freedom, voice out their ideas and thoughts with me about the business. I listen and analyze what’s good and not good. It is always good to get other people’s opinion and ideas. 2 heads are better than 1. But you have to know too much ideas can get complicated. It is always good to just listen and analyze. I may miss out something or have not thought of it. But when it reaches a level when the staff is doing her own thing without my consent, that’s a whole different story. As a employer as i mention earlier, privilege given doesn’t mean it’s a right. Each company has it’s own policies. Companies have policies cause to ensure operations run smoothly. So that Employees know their job scope and responsibility. Employees should not abuse their privileges.

Till next time…
