Ice Skating Was My Obsession When I Was A Teenager

How could i forget, my craziness for ice skating. I started skating when i was 14, and i was obsessed with it. It all started with 1 of my girlfriend decided that we should try out ice skating one day. So we head out to Central Park over the weekend. Found, Woolman Rink.

<—- Woolman Rink

That was the first time i tried ice skating. After that i was hooked!. Not just me, but me and my 2 best friends were hooked too. I guess i was the extreme one. We started going every weekends to every weekday. At some point we were so ridiculous. When Woolman Rink was close for functions, and we couldn’t skate. We would go crazy and find other rinks to skate. Not too far from Central Park, we head on to…. Rockerfeller Centre.

<—- Rockerfeller Centre

The rink there was not as big as Woolman Rink but we needed our fixed. Rockerfeller rink is cater more for tourist attraction. Usualy there’s not many people there. All of us started with the ugly rental skates that was provided by the rinks, sorry no pics. I would like to show you how ugly it was. Can’t complaint i was only 14 and it does the job. When i see people wearing those cool hockey skates, i just had to have them. So….

<— My first Bauer hockey skates

Since i’m size 4, i am able to buy kids size which cost me only 50 bucks at that time :D . My girlfriends are not so lucky they had bigger size so they have to buy the adult size which is about $90-$100.

All this while you must be thinking i was obsess with figure skating…. nop i’m not. I’m obsess with ice skating freestyle. What is it ? Basically it’s dancing hip hop or freestyle on ice. Yes you can actually do that.  Figure skating is on the contemporary side. Hockey skates, dances freestyle. It’s kind hard to describe how it actually looks like. But if you understand hip hop. Most moves are the same but you just do it on skates. It is a little difficult but it’s challenging. That is why i was obsessed with it, cause if you want ot be good, you have to practice all the time. And practice makes perfect ;) . I was 1 of the girls that was pretty good. Freestyle skating are mostly for guys. That caught a lot of attention from people…. ok mostly guys. I was even invited to join the Rink Rats. They were these cool people that hang at the back of the rink and does freestyle. I didn’t accept their invitation i was with the Asian group. We became friends and they taught me a lot of stuff. We meet up at the rink and practice all the time. Skated for 4 years, till i flew back to Asia.

Another Boring Night

Sitting here staring at the lights waiting for another boring night to pass.

I remember when i was in elementary school and i wrote an essay about “what i want to be when i grow up”. And i wrote i want to be a dancer. Even though i didn’t become a dancer. But the passion remains through out the years of growing up.

I had some lame dance class in high school, it was under curriculum, something i had to take. It was a mixture of ballroom dancing and line dance. I remember doing the tango with my female partner cause we’re both late comers to class. So we paired up and since she was taller than me, she had to be the guy. That was my first experience dancing with someone. Was not how exactly how i would picture it, but still it was an experience.

At that time, hip hop was really “in” and was the cool thing to do. If you can’t dance, you would seem very uncool. And you know teenagers, they can be so cruel. Like every other teenager i watch lot’s of MTV, VH1 etc try to pick up some moves. Luckily i am not too bad. I had some music in my bone.

<— My hangout place was at Soho, Broadway and i always see people coming down from this building, seems like a dance class. One day i checked it out. It was a hip hop class. It was only 10 bucks for 1 and half hrs. So i decided to try it out. I think i was in the wrong class, everyone was so advance. Doing the Janet Jackson thing. All in sequence, everyone knows the steps and they’re really fast learner. Or maybe they been dancing for awhile. Can’t follow at all, after that i think so much for dancing class. The dance studio is beside Urban Outfitters, the building i was talking about. On the side there’s a flight of stairs. It’s on the 3rd floor, and before u start to dance you are getting your warm up on the stairs.

Moving along… like any other teenager, i bought a fake ID and check out some clubs. Unfortunately i only got to go to Limelight. Which was a broken down church that turn into a club. It was located in a former church on Sixth Avenue Manhattan and east of Chelsea. It was close down in 1996 due to some drug dealer and  killing at the club. After some years pass, now it’s re-open into Avalon. Needless to say i got in and saw some amazing dancers in the club. They have 2 rooms, main room was the techno room and the 2nd room was hip hop. And you can smell massive dope in the corners. They also have cage dancers. Maybe it was a little too much for a 17 yr old, but it was a unforgettable experience. And that made me even want to know more about dancing.

My passion for dancing grew even more everyday. I started dancing at home with my friends. My friends and i use to hang in my house and dance or try to make up routines or steps. Occasionally some people in the neighborhood will have house parties and people would dance and show off their steps. It was pretty awesome.

One of my favourite movie ” Save The Last Dance” Something people  can relate to. It’s not just about dancing, it’s also about multi racial people hanging out, getting together etc.

Can’t believe i’ve written so much. So much for now. I’ve things i forgot to do, better do it now.

Till next time….

Something To Kill Time When I’m Bored. Mushroom In My Bathroom

The weirdest thing that i recently found is there’s a mushroom growing in my bathroom. I feel so disgusted by it. Just disturbs me, can’t even sleep without thinking about it. My bf ask me to Google it and see if anyone is facing the same problem. Thank you to the online world, there ARE people out there that’s facing the same problem.

As i was just about to take a picture of the mushroom to blog about it, i just realize that the mushroom just died. Hmm.. did they just grow by itself and die by itself ?.

I already told ya, it’s disgusting. By the way, this is not a doggy bathroom. It seems that the mushrooms are growing in the bathrooms. Usually if you have a leaky toilet. Some say near the shower curtain or tiles on the side or near the toilet. Some say, pour bleach on it but it still grows back. So it seems like there’s some sort of fungi beneath the tiles. I don’t know, mine just died so let’s hope it doesn’t grow back.
